What is Open Mat Jiu-Jitsu and how does it work?
If you are new to the world of Jiu-Jitsu, fear not, as we are here to guide you on an exciting journey into the realm of the open mat.
What is the Jiu-Jitsu open mat?
Have you ever heard the phrase “open mat” thrown around, but have no idea what it means? Fear not, my friend! Open mat sessions are where the real magic happens and we're here to give you the inside scoop.
Firstly, attending open mat sessions are highly recommended for beginners like you. Sure, it may seem intimidating at first, but trust us when we say it's worth it! The open mats give you the chance to put all this theory into practice, which is essential when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu.
During the open mats, you roll with other practitioners and that's when the real fun begins! It's a great way to learn by doing, and you'll be surprised at how much you learn in just an hour. The best part? Anyone can participate, regardless of the color of the belt!
Open mats are often informal and offer students a safe space to practice specific skills or simply train with each other. They are a great method for Jiu-Jitsu students to develop their skills, maintain their physical fitness, and foster a sense of community within the gym.

Train Traditional Shotokan Karate & Competitive Karate in our structured mixed-age Karate programme, where adults and children can train together in a technical, disciplined and family-friendly environment.
This membership is ideal for parents who would like to train alongside their children, as well as adults who want to begin Karate, return to training, improve their technique or progress towards competition.
The programme combines the foundations of Traditional Shotokan Karate including kihon, kata, kumite, movement, coordination and discipline with modern competitive Karate training.
Training follows the technical direction and coaching philosophy of Sensei Raphael Veras, founder of Veras Academy since 2004 in London, 5th Dan Karate coach and former Luxembourg National Kumite Coach.
Raphael has decades of international coaching and athlete-development experience, including work in high-performance environments in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Jamaica and Luxembourg.
From 2020 to 2025, he worked extensively with Luxembourg’s national-team programme, coaching established senior athletes including Jenny Warling, Laura Hoffmann and Pola Giorgetti, while also helping develop the next generation of Luxembourg competitors.
That long-term youth-development work continues to be reflected today in athletes such as Jordan Sibille and Alexander Davies, who spent important formative years within the Luxembourg national-team environment during Raphael’s tenure and have since achieved major international results.
Raphael’s coaching system is also reflected in the careers of his sons Luan, Liam and Luca Veras, whom he developed from childhood. Under his guidance, they competed successfully across Europe and internationally, with Luan becoming European Champion in February 2020, immediately before the pandemic brought much of European competition to a halt.
Whether your goal is to learn Karate, improve fitness and confidence, train alongside your child or develop towards competition, this programme offers a strong technical foundation under internationally experienced coaching.

We would like to ask for parents support by being brief when dropping and picking your child up. As you know we do not have the capacity for all parents to be with their children while they are training.
Please take no more than 5 minutes during this transition to get them ready for training with uniform 🥋 , water 💦 and flip-flops 🩴 .
The longer you prolong the departure the harder it gets, as we need to focus our attention on all children.
By doing this you will help us to prevent overcrowding and distraction during your child’s training.
It is normal for some children to have difficulty separating from parents when first attending the gym, so we would like the space for the newcomers to analise the environment and our methodology of training.
In our experience, children are nearly always quick to get involved in play or activities as soon as parents are gone.
In order to ensure the safety and quality of training for your children, we ask that at pickup you remember to stay in the foyer area (the entry hall by the front door) and wait for your child to be ready to leave .
This will help us to ensure a smooth transition from our gym to parent, and minimise the chaotic nature of pickup time for everyone.
Your cooperation is very much appreciated.
