Hockey Prep Academy (Ages 5-9) - Hockey Levels 2-3 | FALL 2026 | 6:30 - 7:20pm

The Hockey Prep Academy is for ages 5-9: Designed to build solid skating fundamentals and introduce basic hockey techniques. Students will be given weekly off-ice warm ups to be done at home / on their own before coming onto the ice. This is to teach the importance of stretching, flexibility, spatial awareness, and confidence in sport. The Hockey Prep Academy follows an official Learn to Skate hockey curriculum to ensure high quality, progression and consistency. This program emphasizes agility, proper stance, stride, edge use, and basic game scenarios, preparing skaters for future competitive play. Skaters will learn the basics of stick handling, passing, receiving passes, shooting and hockey game play. Participants will be working on the Learn to Skate Hockey Levels 2 / 3 and must have the ability to independently skate forward, basic backwards skating, fall and stand up, basic stopping, forward swizzles and 2 foot glides. Suitable for non-competitive hockey enthusiasts eager to improve or learn hockey.

HOCKEY LEVEL 2 CURRICULUM: 

• Forward strides using 45 degree V-push, focus on good recovery and alternating arm drive

• Forward one-foot push and glide (R and L)

• Forward c-cuts: single leg (R and L) and alternating feet (R and L) in a straight line

• Backward hustle or march, then glide on two feet

• Backward swizzles / double c-cuts (4-6 in a row)

• Backward c-cuts, single leg (R and L) and alternating feet (R and L) in a straight line 

HOCKEY LEVEL 3 CURRICULUM: 

• Lateral march (both directions)

• Forward c-cuts (half swizzle pumps) on a circle, both directions

• Forward outside edges on half-circles (large Cs), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink

• Forward inside edges on half-circles (large Cs), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink

• Backward c-cuts (half-swizzle pumps_ on a circle, both directions

• Backward snowplow stops: one and two foot V-stop

• One foot moving snowplow stop (R & L), introduce 1/4 turn with hips to hockey stop

• Forward stops and starts

MANDATORY EQUIPTMENT POLICY:

Skaters must have a HECC-approved hockey helmet with a face cage, hockey skates, gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey pants, gloves, jock/Jill strap, hockey socks, jersey, mouthguard and a hockey stick. We recommend a beginner hockey kit which can be found at sporting stores such as Bensen and Ferguson or online on Amazon.

SKATE & EQUIPRTMENT RENTALS ARE NOT AVAILABLE.

LEARN TO SKATE MEMBERSHIP:

Skaters must have an active Learn to Skate USA membership account before the first day of class. Register at https://www.learntoskateusa.com/registration . If you are unsure of how to register please enter 000 during registration and contact us at info@fairfieldskatingclub.com.

ON ICE BREAKDOWN: 

Hockey Prep Academy skaters will be skating on 1/3 sheet of ice. They will have a 5 minute free skate warm up on their section of the ice, followed by 40 minute lesson time, and 5 minute free skate time within their area at the end. 

REFUND POLICY: Please note there are NO refunds or make up classes. 

ALL PARENTS / GUARDIANS MUST REMAIN IN THE FACILITY DURING LESSONS.
