Mental Skills Training (MST) is an essential aspect of Sport Psychology that equips dancers with techniques to optimize their mental and emotional states for better performance. While mental skills training covers a broad range of topics surrounding dance and performance, some of the most common areas of focus are briefly discussed below:

This training involves setting specific, measurable, and achievable goals that help dancers stay focused and motivated throughout their training and performances. Mental skills surrounding stage fright are taught to help dancers manage stress and maintain the optimal level of arousal needed for peak performance. Imagery and visualization exercises are used to mentally rehearse routines, which can enhance muscle memory and build confidence before stepping onto the stage. Additionally, dancers learn to develop positive self-talk, which is crucial for maintaining confidence and focus, especially in high-pressure situations. Concentration and focus strategies are also emphasized to help dancers remain present in the moment, minimizing distractions that could affect their performance.

How Can These Techniques Benefit Dancers?

Integrating these mental skills into their routine allows dancers to improve performance consistency, build resilience against setbacks, and enhance overall confidence. This integrative approach not only contributes to success on stage but also fosters a deeper enjoyment and satisfaction in their dance journey. Lauren is passionate about guiding dancers in developing these mental tools, empowering them to achieve excellence both in their dance careers and in their everyday lives.
