Cyr Wheel Exploration: Improvisation and Discovering New Pathways w/Julia Ruth

This workshop, open to all Cyr Wheel levels, is designed to give students confidence in their creation as artists. Students will be guided through different activities and given prompts to help them explore and create new movements involving the Cyr Wheel. This workshop will encourage students to break free of their shell and think outside of the box (or circle). Because of the simplicity of the apparatus, there are no prerequisite skills that students must have to join the workshop; students will be able to generate plenty of material through the activities presented. Students will also have many opportunities to practice and gain comfortability with improvisation due to the class structure and partnering drills.

Julia Ruth is a circus performer passionate about strength and individuality. Her first opportunity in performance came in 2010 when she joined an exhibitional gymnastics troupe, performing routines on various male apparatuses and basing for an adagio duo. This experience gave her a strong foundation in gymnastics strength progressions, and she went on to become a personal trainer and strength coach specializing in body weight training. Beyond applying strength to circus disciplines, Julia is interested in unique movement and expression to help tell a story. Her training and coaching on her main discipline, Cyr Wheel, draws on improvisation exercises to explore personal vocabulary and movement.
