Meditation and Mysore with Joey Miles
Join Joey (Ashtanga Yoga Leeds) for this very special monthly class. The class begins with a 30-minute guided sitting meditation followed by Mysore Style Self-Practice.
Beginning the practice with sitting meditation can help to set a mood of calm, focus and ease before we begin our postural practice.
Mysore Style Self Practice is the traditional way to learn Ashtanga Yoga. In a Mysore class, you learn the sequence of postures (asana) through individual instruction from the teacher. The sequence is learned gradually over time. This incremental method of learning enables you to develop the focus, strength and flexibility to prepare you for the next posture whilst also memorising the sequence. In addition, you will learn how to link the postures together through smooth, flowing movement called vinyasa. Vinyasa is a synchronisation of breath and movement, the outward expression of our vital energy or prana. Other important aspects of the practice that you will learn are the correct breathing technique (ujjayi breathing) which creates a rhythm and tempo for your practice, the bandhas (locks) which regulate the flow of prana and drishti (gaze points) which help you to focus inwards. This traditional, step-by-step approach is an effective and accessible method. You’re able to practice at your own pace whilst surrounded by the energy and inspiration of others. It’s like a one-to-one class in a group setting.
As Joey is now only teaching in Leeds once a month, he wants to try to share his attention evenly between those attending, as such, this event is not open to beginners. To attend we ask that you have a consistent, regular practice and have memorised up to Marichyasana A in the Primary Series. Feel free to get in touch if you’re unsure about suitability.
