Aerial Hoop or Lyra is the artform of exploring acrobatic movements, choreography and transitions in and around a circular metal hoop suspended off the ground. A hoop can be practiced as static or ‘spinning’ which is when a swivel is attached to the top of the rigging straps to allow the hoop to rotate or ‘spin’ adding to the style of choreography.
During our aerial hoop classes students can expect to start with a good warm up, focusing on mobility, flexibility and strengthening exercises. You’ll then learn something new or review fundamental techniques and tricks on the aerial hoop.
Our overall term plan for our students is for them to learn and work on refining basic skills, get introduced to new moves on the low and top bar, build confidence with the sling, as well as combinations of spins or dynamic entrances and basic shapes and rolls. We’ll pay particular attention to the safety elements involved in aerial by refining how to enter and exit aerial hoop tricks and sequences.
We’ll have fun with creative styles and help you to find yours, and to make your sequences flow!
The end of the lesson will be dedicated to working on flow and transitions, using the skills learned during the term, followed by an appropriate cool-down to prevent injuries.
Please arrive 5 minutes before class and bring extra layers to protect from bruises for a smoother learning process.
The class is ideal for improvers.
