Rope 'N' Rolls | Aerial Intensive

Circus Factory Cork is delighted to host an aerial intensive focusing on Rope, Silks, and Straps with Gianluca Gerlando Gentiluomo. The intensive will take place over two days, with day one focusing on silks and rope, and day two holding a straps workshop.

Workshop Details

Silks and Rope Workshop

Day 1 / March 28th

Open to all levels (during the course, if there are very different levels, Gianluca will divide the work, generally into two levels). The two apparatuses are as different as they are similar and allow for complementary work for those who practise either rope and/or silks. He likes to see the study of the “technique” of a discipline as “grammar” or a basis for composing more articulate “phrases”, enriching it with “artistic research”. Technique is therefore not something to be underestimated in the search for one's own style, but a solid starting point to be consolidated in the body. Part of the work will therefore be dedicated to the detailed analysis of movements and “motor patterns” that are fundamental to the study of any figure or transition on the rope.

In particular, the work will focus on:

  • Specific physical preparation for the type of work to be done

  • Study of certain sequences using positions of strength, dynamic movements and control

  • “Aerial proprioception”: study of rolling up and down, C-shape and back balance, and different applications in dynamics or with control

  • Dynamic movements: study of certain principles of dynamics in aerial acrobatics and application to certain sequences

Straps Workshop

Day 2 / March 29th

Gianluca's straps workshop is back! (He last did it 2 years ago in CF). It's open to those with at least an intermediate level in aerial acrobatics, as well as those who already practise this discipline. Straps are an excellent tool for physical preparation for all aerial disciplines, but they also offer a wide range of tricks and sequences that can be supplemented by further personal research.

In particular, the work will focus on:

  • We will start with basic static positions: Pike, nutcracker, straddle, meat hook, scorpion/back flag and their preparations and possible variations, links and sequences;

  • Study of the "grip around the arms" for push work, back balance, roll up, etc.

  • Spin work and study of flair

Who is this workshop for?

  • Aerialists who have been training aerial silks, rope or straps. You don't need to be an expert, but see the requirements below for each workshop.

Are there any prerequisites to attend?

  • Fabric (silks) and rope workshops: Open to mixed levels. At least one year of experience with the rope or silks is required, along with good stamina and the ability to do a straddle even with bent arms.

  • Strap workshops: Open to those with at least an intermediate level in aerial acrobatics, as well as those who already practise this discipline.

Why You Should Attend this Aerial Intensive

  • "Analytical study of aerial movements: I try to provide tools that allow you to go beyond the trick!

  • We have a lot of fun during the classes!

  • I like to create a channel between myself and the student that provides continuous stimulation. I am open to suggestions from the group on the topic being addressed in order to further the study;

  • I am not interested in the level, but in the desire to work;

  • We don't only work towards goals that are easily achievable during the workshop, but there are tools that will still be necessary even after a long, long time."

What Should You Bring?

  • Everything they consider necessary to protect their bodies.

  • With the straps, I recommend wrist guards that are not too "thick" (so not sponge), and I recommend cutting off the toe of a sock and slipping your hand inside it, which provides excellent protection for straps that are not too thick.

Circus Factory has a microwave, kettle and small kitchen. The Marina Market Food Hall is also just across the road. The Black market is behind us.
